Day 1: A Warm Welcome to Cologne
My journey began when I reached Cologne using the Intercity Express (IEC) rail system. The city is soaked in history and vibrant culture, this is evident as soon as you exit the Cologne train station. The iconic Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, dominates the skyline and welcomes you with inspiring Gothic architecture. I settled into a charming hotel, conveniently located near the city center, and then I started exploring.
Cologne Cathedral
I started my day with a visit to the Cologne Cathedral. Standing before this architectural marvel, you will be humbled by its grandness and intricate details. As you step inside the Cathedral, the play of light through stained glass windows creates a mesmerizing atmosphere.
Inside of Cologne Cathedral is majestic. As you gaze upward, your eyes are drawn to the glorious vaulted ceilings, You will appreciate the artisans who crafted this masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
The cathedral houses the Shrine of the Three Kings, said to contain the relics of the Three Wise Men.
Something even more magnificent, St. Peter’s Bell, the largest Free-Swinging Bell in the World is over one of the towers of the Cologne Cathedral. It is super amazing as the mass of this bell is 24,000 kg. 😲
The Cathedral Tower: You must not miss this one if you can climb 533 steps. For the breathtaking aerial view of Cologne city, this is the best spot.
As you explore further, you’ll be overwhelmed by the grandness of the Cathedral, and complex details of the choir stalls, and the heavenly beauty of stained glass windows.
Visiting Cologne Cathedral
I would strongly recommend visiting their official website before you plan your trip.
Entry to Cologne Cathedral is free. You have to pay if you want to visit the tower and treasury.
You can visit the Cathedral 7 days a week. Monday to Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday: 1 pm to 4 pm.
I think visiting Cologne Cathedral is one of the most attractive experiences in Germany. And of course, if you can visit in winter during the Christmas 🎄 market season it will be a marvelous travel experience.
Hohenzollern Bridge: Hohenzollern Bridge is one of the most enjoyable places in Cologne. I was amazed by so many locks. This bridge is evidence of so much love and affection in this world. If you closely look at some of the locks you can read the names of people and dates on the lock. This bridge vibrates with the energy of love.
As the sun begins to set Hohenzollern Bridge turns even more serene. This bridge offers a breathtaking panorama of the city. The sunset around this bridge will be a memorable one.
Strolling beside Rhine River: My hotel was quite close to this place so I decided to take a late evening walk. Walking along the Rhine River with the breeze of cold wind gushing across your face will make you feel alive. And of course, the vibrant view of the River overlooking Hohenzollern Bridge is splendid. You can find cozy riverside cafes for a leisurely lunch/dinner. The view of the river, combined with the tantalizing aroma of local delicacies, makes for a delightful experience.

Day 2: Art and Culture Extravaganza
Ludwig Museum: If you appreciate and adore art you must plan a visit to the Ludwig Museum. To plan your visit check the Museum website for all the details. The museum is home to an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, the museum captivates us with works by Picasso, Warhol, and other masters.
Cologne Zoo: I wasn’t able to visit Cologne Zoo, but this is something you can keep on your list when in Cologne. The zoo is big enough to have 10,000 animals with more than 850 species. Witnessing the biodiversity and tropical rainforests can be a perfect afternoon escape.
Cologne Triangle: Köln Triangle is a beautiful location to adore the view of Cologne city. This panoramic observatory is at a height of 103.2 meters tall building in Deutz, Cologne. To access the viewing platform you need to pay a 5Euro fee. Once on top of the building, it offers a breathtaking view of the entire Cologne. I loved this place and would recommend going.
Cologne Evening Cruise: The evening Cruise at the Rhine River is fascinating. The city’s landmarks are bathed in a soft glow as cruise glide through the water. The peaceful journey provides a unique perspective of Cologne, allowing you to appreciate its beauty from a different angle.

Day 3: Exploring Hidden Gems
Lindt Chocolate Museum
The Lindt Chocolate Museum is a fun-loving place, I bought so many chocolates while also experiencing the chocolate-making process. It’s so interesting to walk around the chocolate museum.
Chocolate Museum lets you oversee how this delicious chocolate is made from beans. The production of chocolate and the packing of chocolate can be seen through the glass window.
Ehrenfeld District: Vibrant Ehrenfeld district, an artistic enclave known for its murals, quirky boutiques, and indie cafes. Explore the streets adorned with street art, discovering hidden gems that reflect the community’s alternative spirit.
Old Town of Cologne: You can try different food options in Old Town of Cologne. Cobbled streets and historic architecture create a charming backdrop. I chose to have some tomato soup along with bread and it was amazing.
The Belgian Quarter: A short walk takes you to the trendy Belgian Quarter, known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, cafes, and street art.
It was a super-rich travel experience for me. This German city has left an indelible mark on my travel expedition and I depart with hearts full of gratitude and a promise to return for adventures I could not complete.
Another tip
Visit Cologne during Christmas: The Christmas market in Cologne is precious. This time of the year is superb as the entire city is illuminated with Christmas lighting and the streets glow with warm lights. Open markets sell mulled wine that helps to keep you warm in cold winter weather.
